Gemma Ray premiered her new video for “The Wheel” on Vevo, and the colorful and surreal animated clip – directed by Lucy Dyson. “The Wheel,” which also features vocals from Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) and was featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered, is the lead track off the Berlin-based British singer’s recent album Milk For Your Motors. Released August 26, 2014 via Bronze Rat Records, the album has garnered Ray glowing press from All Music Guide, American Songwriter, Culture Collide, MOJO, Mother Jones, and Variety, among others.
Ray will travel stateside this spring for a two and a half week-long North American tour supporting Kitty, Daisy & Lewis beginning March 31st in Solana Beach, CA. The dates continue through April 17th in Washington, DC, and include a Los Angeles show on April 3rd and a New York show on April 14th.
Milk For Your Motors sees Ray continuing with her pursuit of the dramatic: immersing herself in opposing themes of beginnings and endings, movement and stillness, and coming full circle – possibly best summarized by the lyrics to opener “The Wheel”(“the time will come…our love will burn”). Ray self-produced the album by capturing her live band sessions with no embellishment and then, through serendipitous encounters, pulled in the services of a host of unlikely contributors, including Alan Vega (Suicide), Toby Dammit (Iggy Pop), Deke Leonard (The Man Band), Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), Fiona Brice (John Grant, Placebo), and the Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg. The result is another Gemma Ray long-player that plays by its own cinematic rules and displays some of her hardest songs alongside some of her most tender.
