Mike Watt And Il Sogno Del Marinaio Releasing 2nd Album

Il Sogno Del Marinaio means “the sailor’s dream” in Italian and it’s the name of a trio composed of Andrea Belfi on drums, Stefano Pilia on guitar and Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Iggy & The Stooges) on bass. They release their second album secondo canto on August 26 on the clenchedwrench imprint and start a 53 date in 53 day tour two weeks later.

Il Sogno Del Marinaio began in the November of 2009 when Stefano Pilia wrote Mike Watt an invitation to join him and his buddy Andrea Belfi in a performance at festival in Cesana, Italy. Stefano had met Watt four years earlier while Watt was taking his second opera on tour – the Italian promoter for those gigs had Stefano on board to help Watt with some native assistance. Lo and behold was Watt surprised to get that invite out of the blue but found it an excellent opportunity, especially we he began to practice with Stefano and Andrea for not only that festival but also a six gig Italian mini-tour with two days in the middle set aside to record an album which resulted in their debut album. All three with busy schedules, the release of “La Busta Gialla” was delayed ’til January of 2013 so they could make time to do a tour supporting it.

The tour was a Europe one and they enjoyed it much, deciding a second album should be recorded as soon as they could with a release much closer to its completion and tour following. A day after being part of the last “All Tomorrow’s Parties” festival ever, they traveled to Vaccum Studio in Bologna, Italy in December of 2013 to record “Canto Secondo” with Bruno Germano at the knobs. like with the debut album this also is being released on Watt’s clenchedwrench label.

Andrea Belfi is a not only a drummer but also a composer. Originally from Verona in Italy, a few years ago he relocated to Berlin, Germany and is part of many music projects such as Carla Bozulich, b/s/s, Hobocombo, Rosolina Mar, Belfi/grubbs/Pilia trio, The Swifter, Andrea Belfi solo, etc.

Stefano Pilia is also a composer besides being a guitarist and though originally from Genoa, Italy has been in bologna quite a while. he’s also part of many projects, such as 3/4hadbeeneliminated, in Zaire, Massimo Volume, Belfi/grubbs/Pilia (like Andrea), Rokia Traore, Stefano Pilia solo, etc.

Mike Watt got started in music with D. Boon and with him later went on to form the Minutemen in 1980. Since then Watt’s been with Dos, The Stooges, fIREHOSE, The Black Gang, Banyan, Secondmen, Missingmen, Brother’s Sister’s Daughter and many side projects, always looking for somewhere to learn using his bass, both taking and giving direction as whatever the situation calls for. With Il Sogno Del Marinaio, Watt finds himself more in a collaborative mode like with minutemen or dos – this being different than asking people to take direction like for his three operas (with Black Gang, Secondmen and Missingmen) or himself taking direction (such as with The Stooges) but arriving at a direction via consensus.
