Austin, TX guitar & drum duo Black Pistol Fire have given Spotify the advance stream of their new album. Titled Hush Or Howl, the eleven song offering will be released in physical and digital editions via Modern Outsider Records (The Crookes, The Black And White Years) on April 1st. With a foot firmly entrenched in the raw delta blues and rustic folk, this is electrified Americana with a sometimes punk-ifed tempo.
Black Pistol Fire has wasted no time since forming in 2009, with Hush Or Howl being their third full-length offering. Composed of Toronto transplants, Kevin McKeown (guitar/vocals) and Eric Owen (drums), the two proclaim that the newest album is their best sounding and most varied to date. Examples of this variation in songwriting is in the melodically raucous gut-puncher “Hipster Shakes” to the banjo-picked and washboard percussive stomp of “Your Turn To Cry.”
With all of the new songs road-tested in front of live audiences, Black Pistol Fire pride themselves on their stripped down but bombastic live performances. As Huffington Post UK said of the band during a review of SXSW “While comparisons to The Black Keys and White Stripes are a reasonable reference, live the band emerged as the most energetic and musically versatile of all the bands playing the festival.”
The band has shared stages with notable artists including Band Of Skulls, Weezer, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Shonen Knife and Lucinda Williams. Look for a tour announcement in support of the new album shortly.
